Our retail department raises vital funds for St Leonard’s through the sale of pre-loved goods through our shops and is also a valuable face of the Hospice across our local communities.
We are looking for someone who is competent and certified in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) to check donated electricals are safe for resale.
When am I needed?
This is a flexible role that can be shared between a number of volunteers.
Our shops and Donation Centre are open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm. E-commerce is open the same hours Monday to Friday.
Shifts can be arranged at a time to suit you, preferably on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
What will I be doing
- Working alongside staff and other volunteers at the Donation Centre, e-commerce department or one of our Retail sites. Our locations are:
- Acomb (including Donation Centre & E-commerce)
- Fulford
- York (Scarcroft Road, Layerthorpe, Colliergate & Fossgate)
- Haxby
- Tang hall
- Selby
- Easingwold
- Malton
- Pocklington
- PAT testing donated electrical items for resale
- Taking responsibility for the safety of electrical items deemed suitable for resale
- Accurately documenting records of tested items
- Following procedures for disposal of unsafe electrical items
What skills and qualities will I need?
- Be PAT trained, as proven by a nationally recognised certificate (equipment is provided)
- Be able to follow PAT testing procedures fully, to ensure safety of equipment
- Have a positive attitude
- Demonstrate great attention to detail
- Maintain confidentiality and discretion
- Be able to work under the instruction of the managers and to work as part of a team of volunteers

Support and Supervision
Volunteers will be supervised by the department Managers on site, supported by the St Leonard’s Hospice Retail Team, based in the Support Office, who together will provide you with general training and liaise closely with you over all aspects of your role.
The Volunteer Services Team will help guide you through the application and induction process and be your point of contact for general enquiries about volunteering.
Volunteers are required to complete mandatory training modules which are usually delivered via our online platform. Additional, booster and refresher training may be delivered as needed via e-learning, video links or face to face. You may also be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
