Our retail department raises vital funds through the sale of second hand goods through our shops and is a valuable face of the hospice in local communities.
When am I needed?
Our shops are open Monday – Saturday 9am – 4pm. Morning shifts tend to run 9am – 1pm, Afternoon shifts tend to run 12:30pm – 4:30pm and Duke of Edinburgh shifts are a minimum of 2 hours for age 14 years and over and require a commitment of at least three months.
We have vacancies across our shops on various days, especially in Tang Hall, but are particularly looking for help in with the following shifts:
Acomb clothes – Someone flexible or Saturday AM (not on the till)
Acomb Furniture – Help needed on Tuesday, Friday PM, Saturday AM
Broadway (Fulford) - Help needed sorting especially on Wednesdays, Thursday PM and Friday PM
Colliergate (town centre) – No vacancies currently
Fossgate (town centre) - No vacancies currently
Haxby – Looking for someone happy to use the till on Thursday PM, Friday AM and Friday PM; Someone to help with donations, involving heavy lifting, on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday.
Layerthorpe – Help needed sorting donations
Scarcroft – Saturday AM
Tang Hall (Fourth Avenue) - Volunteers needed every day except Tuesdays
What will I be doing?
We have a variety of roles within the shop and will help find a role that suits you! Some examples of the types of things you could help with:
- Sorting and pricing clothing, bric-a-brac, books, toys, and other donated items ready for sale
- Serving customers on the shop floor
- Accepting donations from the public and promoting the Gift Aid scheme
- Helping create displays on the shop floor
- Helping to research specialist items for our shop and eBay department
- Tidying and restocking the shelves/rails
- Vacuuming at the end of the day and helping close up the shop
What skills and qualities will I need?
- Positive attitude and ability to provide great customer service
- Full training will be provided so a willingness to learn new skills or bring your own skills and knowledge to the role
- Ability to work under the instruction of the manager and work as part of a team of volunteers
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion

Support and Supervision
The St Leonard’s Hospice Retail and Volunteer teams will provide you with full training and liaise closely with you over all aspects of your role.
Volunteers are required to complete mandatory training modules which may be delivered via booklets, our online platform, by video links or face to face. There will be booster and update refresher training as needed and you may be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
